The Five-Year Capital and Strategic Plan 2010-2015 was approved by the Jefferson County Council on Aug. 18, placing a priority on building projects in the county.

Seven arrested in meth lab bust (access required)

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office broke up a methamphetamine lab in rural De Soto and arrested seven people, three woman and four men.

Jefferson College is awarded grant to expand adult education services (access required)

Jefferson College plans to expand its Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) services throughout Jefferson County. The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has awarded the college a $219,670 grant.

Mining proposal moves forward (access required)

Despite residents concerns, the Jefferson County Planning and Zoning Commission recommended approval for a mining operation at 4980 Byrnesville Rd. in House Springs, just south of the Northwest Jefferson County Sports Complex.

Emissions inspectors face federal charges (access required)

Three Jefferson County emissions inspectors have been charged with violations of the Clean Air Act for falsifying auto emission tests.

SLU, feds take tax case out of court (access required)

A university and the federal government have agreed to resolve a lawsuit over taxing medical residents.

Saint Louis University sued the U.S. government last fall alleging it overpaid $24.6 million in Social Security and Medicare taxes from 1995 through March 2005.

Several other teaching medical programs have made similar claims, including Barnes-Jewish Hospital, which sued seeking a nearly $25 million refund.

Arnold city attorney fired (access required)

In an effort to “right a wrong” the Arnold City Council fired Dennis Tesreau of the law firm Wegmann, Stewart, Tesreau, Sherman, Eden & Mikale, P.C. Tesreau was hired in December to replace longtime city attorney Robert Sweeney. Sweeney was the city attorney for 17 years.

Herculaneum sales tax passes on recount (access required)

The half-cent sales tax issue passed in Herculaneum, but just barely. After a tie vote of 247 to 247 on election day Aug. 3, a recount was made. The verification board found one under vote, making the final tally 248 yes votes to 247 no votes. The measure needed a simple majority to pass.

Wrongfully convicted man settles against Scott County (access required)

Joshua Kezer and his mother, Joni, walk away from the Jefferson City Correction Facility after his exoneration in February of 2009. Kezer, who spent almost half of his life in prison for the murder of Angela Mischelle Lawless, has settled his suit with Scott County and the officials who investigated the murder.

Jury finds for Elks Lodge (access required)

The Elks Lodge claims that when the Crystal City Center at Highway A and 61-67, pictured here, was built, the development diverted the natural water flow in the area, causing trash and contaminants to be carried onto the Elks property and pond.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office is handling a number of child pornography cases from Jefferson County.

EDC Executive Director Rauls to retire (access required)

Even though he announced his retirement, Sam Rauls insists he is not going anywhere. Rauls will retire as executive director of the Economic Development Corp. at the end of the month, after providing more than 30 years of service to Jefferson County.

Republicans to square off in August primary (access required)

The pursuit in District 90 is one of only two contested races for state legislature in the primary election on Aug. 3. John C. McCaherty of High Ridge will face Republican challenger Ronald L. Snyder of Fenton. The winner of that race will challenge incumbent Sam Komo, D-House Springs in the general election on Nov. 2.

Three Democrats seek 110th District position (access required)

The race in District 110 has three Democratic candidates: Jefferson County Executive Ed Kemp of Morse Mill; Ben Harris of Hillsboro; and Joe Detter of DeSoto. The 110th District covers parts of Jefferson, Franklin, and Washington counties.
