Sotomayor hearing begins

Judge sees rulings' ‘human consequences'

U.S. Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor, making her case for confirmation as the nation's first Hispanic justice, told lawmakers she had seen the "human consequences" of her rulings as a federal judge. Sotomayor said her 17-year record as a judge showed that she respects precedent, applies statutes as they are written and makes "fidelity to the law" her guiding principle. She made her comments to a Senate committee that earlier in the day had displayed a partisan divide about the role of the judiciary.
