No-show in municipal court will equal fine

The Board of Aldermen passed a bill today that makes failing to appear in municipal court a municipal violation, punishable by a fine of up to $500.

Alderman Craig Schmid sponsored the bill and said individuals currently do not receive notice if they don’t show up. He said now people will be notified when they receive the fine.  Schmid, a Democrat, represents the 20th Ward, which includes all or part of Dutchtown, Marine Villa, Gravois Park and Benton Park West.

Schmid said Mayor Francis Slay’s office asked him to introduce the board bill. Slay spokeswoman Kara Bowlin said the bill was suggested to improve revenue and that it was not in response to state Sen. Jim Lembke’s well-publicized statements that people should ignore red-light camera tickets.

Nevertheless, Bowlin said the bill will apply to red-light cameras. She says she expects Slay will sign the bill into law next week.
