A jury returned all defense verdicts in a historic tobacco trial in St. Louis Circuit Court.
In the case, 37 hospitals sued 11 defendants — six cigarette makers and their parent companies — to recoup health care costs incurred treating smoking-related illnesses of people who could not pay.
Lashly & Baer’s Ken Brostron, the hospitals’ lead lawyer, told the jury in closing arguments the hospitals sustained roughly $455 million in compensatory damages, not including unspecified punitive damages.
The trial started Jan. 31.
The case is St. Louis et al. v. American Tobacco et al., 22982-09652-01.
