Wednesday during a special session in Jefferson City, the Missouri Senate unanimously approved a substantial change to a controversial law governing online contact between teachers and students.
The modified law, SB1, pushes back a deadline for school districts to create written policies on teacher-student online interaction. The deadline is now March 1, 2012. The law requires the policy must include provisions to prevent inappropriate online contact between teachers and students.
The effective date of the previous law has already been pushed back, thanks to an order from Cole County Circuit Judge Jon E. Beetem. Several lawsuits had been filed over constitutional problems with the previous law, sponsored by Sen. Jane Cunningham, R-Chesterfield.
