I turn 39 this month, so when I sat down to review the voluminous recommendations for this year’s Up & Coming class, I had one simple criterion — anyone whose accomplishments made me jealous probably deserved my vote.
Actually, it’s a little more rigorous than that. Being a lawyer 40 or younger or within the first 10 years of practice will get a nominee in the door. But our editors are looking for something more. Many if not most young lawyers are hardworking, intelligent and courteous. We look for those whose legal deeds and community service efforts leap off the page, demonstrating outstanding early legal careers with the promise of even better things to come.
As you peruse the biographies of our 56 winners — written by me and my colleagues Rachel Webb, Heather Cole, Allyssa D. Dudley and Catherine Martin — I think you’ll agree that these are lawyers who stand out. Even if they do make you a little envious.
