Sally L. Thieman has worked on many levels in the hospital industry, from nursing to the legal department. As vice president at Saint Luke’s Health System, she has been a leader in developing compliance programs that keep the institution in step with complex regulations.
What are your proudest career accomplishments?
On behalf of Saint Luke’s Health System, I developed one of the early formal compliance programs in the healthcare industry. This program focuses on education, reporting and non-retaliation and helps our organization comply with very complex healthcare regulatory requirements.
What inspired you to get involved in the public service or justice system?
I was a registered nurse and was aware of how legal concerns can impact healthcare practice. I felt it was important for practicing providers to understand legal requirements and expectations.
What is something that would surprise people about you?
I worked as a nurse at Saint Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City while attending law school. I also hate to shop for anything – clothes, furniture, cars, etc.
What is the best advice you have ever been given or received?
Live within your means.
When you were growing up, what did you want to be?
An acrobat in the circus.
What has been your favorite part of your job?
Working with bright and fun people within an organization that focuses on providing the best care possible for each patient.
