Up & Coming Honorees: Bridgette N. Fu, 35

Associate, Baker Sterchi Cowden & Rice, St. Louis

bridgett-fuPractice Areas: Civil defense

Law school: Saint Louis University School of Law

Bridgette Fu got her start in the law at a young age. Her mother once dropped out of high school but eventually made a career as an attorney.

As a child, Fu often tagged along with her mother to law school classes. The experience planted the seeds of fascination with the law that continued to grow even after she pursued a social work career after college. Realizing that life is short, she took the plunge and signed up for the LSAT.

Fu began her legal career in criminal defense. Her social-work background contributes to what colleagues recognize as excellent client-counseling skills, affirming the humanity of each client and giving them the confidence to brave difficult cases. She brings that determination today to her civil cases involving medical malpractice, transportation and general liability.

What has been your favorite moment as an attorney?

After losing a murder trial, the client sent a letter to my former firm thanking us for the fight we put up for him. It was a hard case, and he had the cards stacked up against him, but the fact that he was still happy with our representation after he received a 70-year sentence meant a lot.

What has been your favorite moment as an attorney?

I love every time I’m sworn into a new court. Taking each oath reminds me of why I got into this profession.

What advice do you have for young lawyers?

Treat every case, no matter how small, like it is the only case they have.

What is something that would surprise people about you?

I’ve had my hair dyed just about every single color and once shaved my head. I also spent a year teaching English in South Korea.
