Jozef Kopchick has been in St. Louis only since 2014, but already he is making a mark on the city and beyond. After graduating from Harvard Law School in 2011, Kopchick worked in the securities litigation and white-collar defense group at Goodwin Procter in Boston. He made his way west to Haar & Woods when his fiancée was accepted to medical school in St. Louis.
Kopchick stands out for his ability to represent clients in sophisticated cases at both the trial and appellate levels. Recently, he was part of a team that obtained the full reversal of a $6 million jury verdict from the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. He also represents clients in lawsuits alleging violations of their civil rights while in state custody.
What inspired you to get involved in the legal profession?
After I graduated from college in 2006, I started working in state government and became a bit of a politics junkie. I quickly realized that many of the policy issues that interested me the most were closely intertwined with legal theory and practice.
What is the best career advice you have received?
Early in my legal career, some of my mentors impressed on me the importance for young lawyers to go outside of their comfort zone and to embrace the opportunities that come with taking on new and unfamiliar challenges.
What is something that would surprise people about you?
I have a cat that we rescued as a semi-feral stray from Forest Park. It took months before we could get him to stop stealing our food, but he’s fully domesticated now.
