2021 Unsung Legal Heroes: Kimberly A. Camarena

Legal Secretary: Office Manager/ Litigation Support, Finney Injury Law

Kimberly Camarena’s day-to-day role is to handle all client relations for St. Louis-based Finney Injury Law. She ensures clients are up to speed on the state of their cases and helps the firm’s attorneys manage records, coordinate depositions and prepare for trial. Her nominator called her “the center of our small injury practice.” Although she joined the firm with no formal legal training, she has since enrolled in paralegal school and is set to graduate soon.

Tell us about your key accomplishments in this role.

I have helped to turn this office into a well-oiled machine. I have created an organized filing system for trial cases that enables our attorneys to have easy access to everything they could need at a moment’s notice. I keep our attorneys on track by ensuring there is a plan for every case we currently are handling and that those plans continue to be in motion. Additionally, I recently negotiated a lien down by $100,000 — putting more money in our injured client’s pocket.

What led you to choose a career in the legal field?

I choose to have a career in the legal field because I love to help people. In our firm, clients are human beings and not just a dollar sign. I love to see how compassionate our attorneys are towards the clients.

What is the best part of your job?

A good result for our clients.

What is the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Absorb as much knowledge as you can.

What is something that would surprise people about you?

I come across as fun and personable — maybe even carefree — in the office, but I am a very hard worker who completes a task as soon as I see that it needs to be done. I never let something go unfinished and I pride myself in checking as many tasks off my list as I can each day. I prioritize efficiency and results for our clients above all.
