2022 Up & Coming Awards: Holly Nighbert, 39

Shareholder, Simmons Hanly Conroy, St. Louis

Holly NighbertPractice Area: Complex Litigation

Law School: University of Dayton

Holly Nighbert became a litigator to help people in critical need.

“My clients are up against some of the largest companies in the world, and the work I’m doing to hold those companies accountable makes a very big difference for real, everyday people,” she writes.

She counts her experience in a San Francisco opioid trial as her top professional accomplishment this year.

“Our trial team received a decision in plaintiffs’ favor after a four-month long bench trial,” she writes.

Nighbert, who works in St. Louis, grew up on a farm in rural Indiana, where her family raised livestock. “However, I’ve been a vegetarian for almost 30 years,” she writes. “My parents can’t believe it.”

What advice do you have for young lawyers?

Find an area of law that you love. I am fortunate to love my job and love complex litigation, and I can’t imagine doing anything else.

If you hadn’t become a lawyer, what profession would you have chosen?

I don’t know. My parents said they knew I’d be a lawyer from a very young age when I wrote letters to companies about their defective products and sent them “evidence” to prove my position. On a much larger scale, this is exactly what I am still doing today.

What is the best career advice you have received?

I’ve been lucky to work with some of the best trial lawyers in the country. They have taught me valuable skills both professionally and personally.
