As an environmental lawyer, it’s no surprise that one of Sarah Struby’s favorite activities is spending time outdoors.

“I live near some incredibly beautiful walking trails, and one of my favorite things to do is take a walk in the evening with my husband,” she writes.

This year was a big one for Struby. She worked hard on a summary judgment briefing related to the cleanup of groundwater contamination near Los Angeles and it paid off when her team prevailed on many of their claims and narrowed the remaining issues for trial.

Her favorite moment as an attorney came when she watched Midwest Innocence Project client Faye Jacobs walk out of prison after serving 26 years in prison. At 16, she was wrongfully convicted of capital murder.

“I was a part of a team that drafted and filed a habeas petition on behalf of Ms. Jacobs and negotiated her release,” she writes.

What advice do you have for young lawyers?

Don’t doubt yourself. Find a mentor and do not be afraid to ask that person questions. Make genuine relationships and connections with people.

What is something that would surprise people about you?

I have a Master’s in Accounting, practiced as a CPA for almost five years, and cannot do simple mental math. I almost always have to ask my husband to calculate the tip when we eat out.

Anything else you want people to know about you?

I pride myself on being a genuine, kind person and an avid Taylor Swift fan.
