The POWER List 2023: Kenneth W. Bean

Ken Bean has a track record of winning high-risk medical malpractice actions.

Bean argued before the Missouri Supreme Court in 2020 that a $1.36 million St. Louis County verdict for a woman’s miscarriage had to be reduced by the amount of a prior confidential settlement. The court heard arguments in the case but in a rare move retransferred it to the Court of Appeals, which reinstated its opinion in favor of Bean’s client, the defendant hospital.

In 2019, he and fellow POWER honoree Phillip Willman defended two St. Louis County physicians and won over allegations stemming from a rare infection causing a patient to lose their eye.

A two-week trial in 2015 resulted in another win for Bean over claims that a Franklin County child who suffered permanent brain damage at birth.

Bean earned his degree from Washington University in St. Louis in 1977. He is a past member of the board of the Missouri Organization of Defense Lawyers.
