Kansas City Municipal Court is hosting this year’s National Domestic Violence Court Open House.
Domestic violence court professionals from states around the country are visiting the court to share best practices on March 30 and 31. The U.S. Department of Justice first designated the court as a mentor for other courts in 2017.
Municipal Court Presiding Judge Courtney Wachal, who is the judge for the Domestic Violence and Drug Court, as well as domestic violence court participants, out-of-state attendees, and area law enforcement are among the speakers in the Kansas City Police Department Community Room on March 30 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Attendees can also observe the domestic violence court and tour the court’s in-house urine analysis drug test lab that day.
March 31 will feature panel discussions and breakout groups from 9 a.m. to noon.
The event will highlight Kansas City-specific programs, including its compliance docket for high-risk offenders and its set-apart domestic violence drug court docket. It will also highlight its Relationship and Sexual Violence Prevention program, for offenders aged between 18 and 24 as well as services for their partners, a domestic violence intervention class for first-time offenders as a bond condition, and a support class for domestic violence survivors.
