Tim Belz’s civil and religious liberties practice includes representing two religious nonprofit organizations that challenged the Affordable Care Act’s requirement that insurance cover contraception in 2015. The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ultimately held that the government’s proposed accommodation process violated the Religious Freedom Restoration Act.
In 2010, he was the lead counsel on appeal in a damages case denying immunity to Missouri juvenile officers and social workers accused of violating the constitutional rights of a private religious school.
As a prosecutor in the U.S. Department of Justice Antirust Division early in his career, he received the Attorney General’s Special Achievement Award.
