Managing Shareholder, Monsees & Mayer

Kansas City

David Mayer has spent his litigation career championing the right to a jury trial — one he regards as among the country’s most essential liberties — and has watched jury-decided cases grow increasingly rare. He traces the decline to settlement-minded lawyering and, more recently, to the pandemic’s continuing effects on trial calendars, and is particularly troubled that young lawyers today have fewer opportunities to prepare and present cases to a jury.

Mayer values well-matched opposing counsel, noting that skilled adversaries enable more productive case evaluation and better client outcomes. His leadership approach centers on giving young lawyers room to develop their own styles, while remaining open to learning from their fresh perspectives in return.

His greatest source of professional pride is his office’s culture of compassion, prompt communication and keeping clients fully informed regardless of case size. “All clients matter otherwise no clients will matter,” he said. Mayer believes the practice of law need not be hand-to-hand combat at every turn.
