Office Managing Partner, Husch Blackwell

St. Louis

Bob Tomaso began practicing law in 1989, in an era when there were no computers or typewriters, all work was handwritten or dictated, the firm library served as the social hub for associates and partners expected lawyers in the office five and a half days a week, Saturday mornings included. On the positive side in those early years, associates were never given billable hour targets and the first two years were treated as an apprenticeship, with junior lawyers shadowing senior ones.

Among his proudest career moments is a “bet the company” case for a successful employee-owned company in a small town that he won on all counts — and through which a number of the employee/owners became lasting friends.

His philosophy: foster a good culture and the rest will follow. He said, “The journey is the adventure.” He advises young attorneys to treat staff well, find a mentor and invest in their fellow associates, many of whom will go in-house.
