The path from general counsel to a top finance role is not one that many have traveled. But as chief in-house lawyers take on a growing number of responsibilities, it’s an increasingly natural transition.
According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, in 2019, only 36% of CFOs at 1,000 of the largest U.S. public companies are certified public accountants. Edith Hamilton, a CFO coach at NEXT New Growth in Los Angeles, said the stepping stones to an executive finance position align with much of what the modern general counsel does now.
