General Counsel and Risk Management Officer, Ungerboeck Systems International Inc.
With law degrees from three countries, fluency in five languages and post-graduate job offers in Paris, Beatrice Zdrodowski figured she would leave St. Louis behind after completing Saint Louis University’s one-year master’s in law program for foreign lawyers.
Then life happened. Her law-school boyfriend came to Paris to propose. The couple returned to St. Louis — husband Dan Zdrodowski’s hometown —and she planted both familial and career roots.
“I initially planned to stay here for a year, then go back to France,” said Zdrodowski, a native of Mauritius, a small island in the Indian Ocean. “I was already negotiating a job opportunity there. When I went back to France, he came on vacation and then we kept in touch. Then he came back for Christmas and New Year’s and proposed.”
Zdrodowski now is general counsel and risk management officer for Ungoerboeck Systems International, an event-software company headquartered in O’Fallon, Missouri, and with global offices in Australia, China, England, France, Germany, Hong Kong and India.
In that role, she provides legal guidance to C-suite staff on issues of licensing, intellectual property, data security and privacy, business transactions, contracts and negotiations, and more.
Colleagues credit Zdrodowski with better integrating the company’s legal department with other Ungerboeck business units and its customers.
“Before Beatrice, our company’s legal department was separate from the rest of operations and was non-customer-facing, whereas now it is actively propelling business forward and is considered as an essential conduit to contract negotiations,” a nominator wrote. “Thanks to Beatrice, the legal, sales, services and IT departments work more closely to ensure that the operational needs are met as the company goes into the marketplace.”
She’s also become an in-house expert on data privacy, developing an internal platform that enables teams to share their related ideas and concerns.
“Data privacy is a big legal challenge for tech companies, especially when they thrive, to quickly develop new, competitive and customized products while implementing proper and commercial reasonable security measures in the post-GDPR era,” a nominator wrote, referring to the European Union’s sweeping General Data Protection Regulation law. “Beatrice truly understands this challenge and has proved to be an asset to the company in this regard.”
Zdrodowski called her position a “dream job” and one that’s “very challenging, exciting and [sometimes] stressful. I feel like I’m a good fit and appreciated by my colleagues.”
Prior to joining Ungerboeck in March 2018, she worked as a contracts compliance officer for the city of St. Louis and in risk management for Charter Communications. In addition to her Saint Louis University degree, she holds degrees from the University of Rennes and Paris Dauphine University in France and the University of Exeter in England.
When not at work, Zdrodowski is an active volunteer, serving on the board of the Near Southside Employment Coalition and the advisory board for Highway to Destiny, a nonprofit resource center for the homeless. In recent months, she also was active in her husband’s unsuccessful campaign as a Republican for St. Louis Circuit Attorney.
