The Iowa Supreme Court opinion that legalized gay marriage probably stands as one of the most important and surprising legal decisions of the year. The case is also an example to lawyers of how to argue and win a controversial and high-profile case. Attorney Dennis Johnson (pictured), the lead lawyer in the landmark Varnum v. Brien case, spoke Wednesday evening to members of KC LEGAL, Kansas City's gay and lesbian bar association. Johnson, who retired from Dorsey & Whitney shortly after the arguments in December, explained how he and other attorneys tackled the case over its lengthy history.
