Smith gets year, Brown probation for obstruction

A federal judge sentenced former state Sen. Jeff Smith to a year and a day in prison and a $50,000 fine and former state Rep. Steve Brown to two years' probation and a $40,000 on charges of obstruction of justice related to a Federal Election Commission investigation into Smith's 2004 congressional campaign.

Former Rep. Brown’s law license may be suspended

State legal authorities took steps today to temporarily suspend the law license of a former state legislator entangled in election violations. The Clayton attorney, Steve Brown (pictured), last month pleaded guilty with Sen. Jeff Smith, D-St. Louis, to obstructing a Federal Election Commission's investigation into a complaint filed by Russ Carnahan during the 2004 Congressional election. Brown and Smith both resigned from the Legislature.
