Over the past two years, what have you learned about work/life balance as a woman?

Wampler & Passanise logoSelf-care is critical to surviving the litigation marathons in which we often find ourselves. Long hours of research, client meetings, and creating defense strategies can take a toll. It’s up to me to make space for things that are life-giving. As women with tremendous responsibilities, we must create a work/life balance and have the courage to stand by our decisions.

Women mentors are so important. Do you mentor others, or did you have an inspirational mentor in your life?

Over the course of my work from intern to legal assistant, while I was attending law school, to joining the firm as its Associate Attorney, there have been two female forces of nature who helped shape the person I am today:

Shawna Kipp and Sandy Ellis. When I was 19, they took a special interest in developing me for a career in law. Shawna was the Senior Paralegal and Sandy the firm’s Legal Assistant. They helped me navigate my career path, teaching me the value of compassion, professionalism, and ultimately the Golden Rule: treating people the way you wish to be treated. Although it wasn’t always convenient, they took time to educate me on the different aspects of the legal and operational sides of the business.

Unfortunately, Shawna died in a house fire right after I passed the Bar. Sandy told me I needed to lead through that difficult time, which was followed in less than a year by the death of our Managing Partner. I’ve learned the value of tenacity, working for the common good, and supporting each other when things get rough.

What are the greatest challenges women in leadership experience? Are more challenges external or internal?

The Imposter Syndrome is real, especially in a male-dominated field. This takes daily work. I overcome this mindset by listening to podcasts, having a trusted therapist, and telling myself there’s a reason clients trust me with their lives. The late Dee Wampler advised me to wake up every day and tell myself that I’m the best person to represent my clients. I’m fortunate to have the support of mentors, colleagues, friends and family, who remind me of my success daily.

What is one quote or phrase you refer to when you need a pick me up or inspiration?

Self-worth is self-determined. If others determine your value, you’ll be limited by their lack of imagination and low expectations. Establish and embrace your worth, make it your guiding star, and never look back.
