Katherine “Kat” Myers can speak eloquently to the vision of her firm.

“Our goal was to try and create a firm that was client-focused and focused on the rights of individuals pursuing cases where they have been victims of discrimination, harassment and retaliation,” she said.

That’s meant a lot of work with the LGBTQ community. In fact, a matter involving restroom and locker room usage by a trans student in the Blue Springs School District has been litigated by the firm since 2014 and is set to go to the state supreme court this year after a favorable result in Jackson County.

“We are constantly willing to take on cases that have undecided questions of law related to the LGBTQ community in hopes of better clarifying their rights under existing law,” said the 38-year-old UMKC graduate.

One of three co-founders of her firm, Myers said that it also supports causes outside the courtroom.

“We’ve been involved in a variety of local organizations that promote the rights of LGBTQ individuals and we continue to take cases that have difficult or unanswered questions of law regarding the rights of LGBTQ individuals to try and define their protections.”

Myers said she likes serving as a mentor to newer lawyers.

“I really enjoy giving back,” she said. “When I started my law firm out of law school 13 years ago, I was blessed with great mentorship from so many members of the legal community, and it is so important for me to give back and try to help others who are growing their practice. It is really rewarding.”

She feels her firm continues to do important work that must be done to protect the rights of community members.

“Everyone should be treated equally in the public sphere and in employment and housing,” Myers noted. “Being a member of the LGBTQ+ community should not be a consideration in whether someone obtains a job or gets to keep their job. They should be treated equally.”
