In 1942, three miles north of where the Gateway Arch now stands, the chemical company Mallinckrodt began a sensitive task: processing uranium ore for the Manhattan Project, the federal government’s secret and successful campaign to build an atomic bomb during World War II. This work created heaps of radioactive waste.
