Missouri Lawyers Media welcomes submissions from Missouri attorneys who won cases all over the country. Although they aren’t included in our annual rankings, here are some of the significant cases we tracked from outside the state in 2023:
Steven Groves and Stephanie Black of Groves Powers in St. Louis, alongside attorneys from Chicago, won a $25 million verdict in Illinois for a railyard worker who lost a leg while trying to board a moving train. The award was reduced to $18.75 million due to the plaintiff’s fault.
Attorneys from Humphrey, Farrington & McClain in Independence had two significant arbitration wins in Kansas. Colin McClain, Ken McClain and Timothy Kingsbury won $19.5 million (reduced to $15.6 million by comparative fault) for a man who was paralyzed at a trampoline facility. Ken McClain and Paul D. Anderson won 31 separate claims against a car dealership, resulting in $14.8 million in damages for customers whose information was misstated on their credit applications.
Andrew C. Robb of Robb & Robb in Kansas City achieved a $15 million settlement for the deaths of a woman and four teenagers whose plane crashed in North Carolina while returning from a hunting trip.
JJ Burns and Josh Becker of Dollar, Burns, Becker & Hershewe in Kansas City obtained a $10 million confidential settlement for an Arkansas woman injured in a rural Kansas truck crash that killed her husband. From the same firm, Tim Dollar and Jordan Dollar achieved a $9 million settlement for a bicyclist who suffered a traumatic brain injury when he was struck by a vehicle on a Kansas road.
Sophie Zavaglia and Christina Ewers of SWMW Law in St. Louis won a $9.7 million verdict from a Wisconsin jury on behalf of a woman who died from childhood exposure to asbestos fibers on her father’s work clothes.
