Lawyers have different reasons for founding their firms, but employment attorneys Sonal Bhatia and E.E. Keenan may have had the best inspiration of all.
“We had just gotten engaged and were inspired by love,” they wrote.
The pair grew up in economically marginal environments where they saw how a lack of employment could hurt a family.
The couple was proud to take on cases that other attorneys wouldn’t touch like sexual orientation discrimination disputes.
“Since then, we’ve opened a New York City office in addition to Kansas City and we’re starting to try cases nationally,” they wrote.
The firm engages in pro bono work including on employment matters and in the criminal justice system, particularly prisoner’s rights matters.
Bhatia, a Swarthmore College graduate who earned her J.D. at Washington University, is vice-president of the National Employment Lawyers Association of Kansas City. She speaks four languages.
Her husband graduated from Harvard before going on to clerk for a federal judge on the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals.
