Managing Counsel, Travelers Insurance
American University Washington College of Law

Practice area(s): Insurance defense

Advice to younger lawyers: Be open to learning from everyone on your team, from the receptionist to the senior partner.

You don’t know: I was the first female elected prosecutor in my hometown in Western Massachusetts.

Why I chose my practice area: As a first-generation college graduate, I knew about lawyers what I saw on “LA Law”: They had the power to help people and to have an impact. That was what I wanted to do.

I might have been: In journalism.

Best advice I’ve received: It’s about how you make people feel. I started my legal career believing that I needed to be tough, which sometimes I do need to be tough, but more importantly success depends on building relationships.

Off the clock: Spending time with my family traveling, skiing, and relaxing at home with the dog!

Favorite professional moment: The ones where I have been a part of a team that accomplished something difficult and meaningful. As a prosecutor, I especially valued my work with victims.
