Pedestrian wrongful death lawsuit resolves before trial
Erin Achenbach//January 12, 2026//
A multimillion-dollar settlement was reached in a lawsuit alleging the wrongful death of a pedestrian.
A $21 million settlement was reached Oct. 6, 2025, between a confidential plaintiff and a confidential defendant.
The family filed the suit in January 2025, after the decedent was struck by a bus operated by the defendants while walking in a pedestrian crosswalk on Oct. 19, 2024. She succumbed to her injuries two days after the incident on Oct. 21.
The plaintiffs were represented by lead attorney David Mayer of Monsees & Mayer in Kansas City, along with Reed Martens. Counsel for the defense was confidential.
“It was an honor to represent this family and guide them through the legal process. This was a horrible tragedy involving the loss of a wonderful daughter, wife and mother,” Martens said. “Resolving the case for the full $21 million policy limits was the only result we would recommend and what the family deserved. Working with experienced defense counsel, we were able to achieve this result a few months prior to our scheduled trial.”
