Kansas woman injured in crash settles with insurer

A Kansas woman whose back was injured when her vehicle was struck by an allegedly drunken driver in Kansas accepted a $100,000 settlement, according to her attorney.

Thomas R. Davis of Brown & Crouppen said the collision occurred early on Aug. 13, 2019, at the intersection of Haskell Avenue and East 19th Street in Lawrence, Kansas. Angela Brandon, of Eudora, was northbound on Haskell. She entered the intersection with a flashing yellow light. Autumn Hale, of Lawrence, was eastbound on East 19th. According to the police report, Hale stopped at the flashing red light and then proceeded through the intersection.

Brandon told Lawrence police that, as she slowed to go through the intersection, she saw Hale stop at the light and then heard Hale’s engine “blaring” as the vehicle accelerated and struck Brandon’s vehicle on the driver’s side. Police investigated Hale, 42, for drunken driving, according to the report.

Brandon, 52, suffered a fracture in her thoracic spine and the worsening of a compression fracture in her lumbar spine that occurred a week earlier in a one-car accident.

Davis said he was able to use medical records to demonstrate how much more serious the lumbar injury was following Brandon’s second accident. He reached a settlement agreement with Farm Bureau Property & Casualty Insurance Company, which insured Hale.
