Family of abused child settles with electronic monitoring company

The family of a two-year-old Buchanan County girl who was sexually abused in 2024 by a man on furlough from Ray County in a similar case has reached a $1 million settlement with the company that failed to properly electronically monitor the perpetrator, who is now serving a 15-year-prison sentence in the earlier case.

Antonio Campos, 27, still awaits trial in the more recent case, in which a then-10-month-old was found with injuries that included a brain bleed, fractured leg and genital trauma.

That alleged abuse occurred just two months before Campos pleaded guilty in a Ray County courtroom to five counts of abuse or neglect of a child stemming from a 2022 case where an 8-week-old boy had injuries including brain bleeding, broken ribs, lacerations to the liver and spleen, a fractured arm and a broken leg.

Plaintiff’s attorney Jill Kanatzar of Dollar Burns Becker & Hershewe in Kansas City said that Campos had been living with the Buchanan County girl’s mother for four months after leaving Ray County — and that defendant Macey Court Services “failed to notify the Ray County Court that it was unable to electronically monitor him.”

“When the perpetrator absconded and the defendant lost the ability to locate him, it failed to notify the prosecutor and court, preventing them from issuing a warrant,” she said.

Records shared by Kanatzar show that the case was settled pre-suit for the limits of all available insurance.

In a brief phone interview, Macey Court Services owner Natalie Macey defended her company’s response, suggesting that court officials and the child’s attorney were also responsible.

“It was a sad situation, but I really don’t feel like I should be the only one at fault,” she said.
