The POWER List 2022: Matthew G. “Matt” Minder

A large part of Matt Minder’s law practice involves advising clients on the selection and availability of trademarks and service marks, and in registering those marks with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. A partner in his firm, he focuses his practice on all aspects of the adoption, prosecution, enforcement and exploitation of trademarks and copyrights.

Minder also works with foreign counsel on behalf of his clients regarding global brand protection and enforcement. He represents clients in federal and state courts in cases and regularly handles inter partes proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.

For 2016, Minder and his Bryan Cave team were recognized by Top Verdict as number 10 of the “Top 20 Verdicts” in Georgia for WIKA Instrument Corp. v. Ashcroft. After a two-week jury trial, a jury found for WIKA on all of its claims and awarded all the relief sought by WIKA — including $3.3 million in Ashcroft’s profits and WIKA’s attorneys’ fees.

Minder has taken on pro bono work throughout his career, including advising clients referred by the Volunteer Lawyers and Accountants for the Arts (VLAA) on various trademark and copyright issues; obtaining orders of protection for clients referred by Legal Services of Eastern Missouri; and protecting clients’ First Amendment rights. In 2012, he was named to The Missouri Bar’s Pro Bono Wall of Fame.

Currently, he serves on VLAA’s board of directors. He is also an adjunct professor for Washington University in St. Louis School of Law.

During his law school years, Minder assisted Professor Graeme B. Dinwoodie in drafting proposed legislation to amend the Lanham Act, on behalf of the American Intellectual

Property Law Association.

Minder earned his law degree from Chicago-Kent College of Law in 2009.
