J.C. Pleban has been described as the kind of lawyer who brings honor to the profession. He credits his success with a piece of advice he received early in his career, which includes developing his own litigation technique.

“You may admire how other lawyers practice, but they are doing it their way,” he says. “Watch others and how they practice. Take pieces of each, and at the end of the day, create your own style.”

What advice do you have for young lawyers? Prepare, prepare, prepare. And when you are done preparing, go talk to another lawyer about your strategies, arguments and other aspects. There is always more to be learned in this profession. In my view, preparation and collaboration are big aspects of learning and growing.

What has been your favorite moment as an attorney? I had a $75 million jury verdict. I really enjoyed helping a well-deserving family that lost their son in a senseless car crash in that case.

What is something that would surprise people about you? I like to cook, especially chicken parm with my daughter.
