Attorney, Paule, Camazine & Blumenthal

Alan Freed entered family law committed to learning the craft from the strongest examples available and to refining his approach with each challenge he encountered. In 1994, Alisse Camazine hired Freed, and his work at the firm broadened his skills as a litigator, mediator and author.

He co-authored a book on family law with Camazine and a separate volume with late partner Dan Card, under whom he also deepened his appellate practice.

Freed has long urged practitioners to communicate in words clients will understand. He co-founded the Collaborative Family Law Association in 2002, taught mediation at Washington University Law School and has presented on the topic at national conferences. He also developed a plain-language separation agreement template now used across Missouri.

Freed noted that mentoring young lawyers in his office has become one of his greatest professional pleasures, as teaching reinforces his own skills and inspires fresh thinking. “Be patient with others and more patient with yourself,” he said.
