Senior Counsel, Capes Sokol

St. Louis

Gary Sarachan entered the practice without a mentor in the traditional sense, learning the craft by observing other lawyers and approaching the work with a clean slate he has never regretted. In his litigation career, he served as an architect of his firm’s growth — overseeing recruitment and instilling a set of values that helped it evolve from a boutique practice into a mid-size firm known for expertise and professionalism.

He also taught at Washington University School of Law for many years, finding it gratifying when former students called years later for his guidance. Sarachan observed that technology, the rise of ADR and greater diversity have transformed the profession, though he laments the decline in how lawyers are regarded publicly.

His leadership philosophy prizes humor, humility and instinct over formula. “Your word is solid; your ethics unimpeachable,” he said. Sarachan tells young attorneys that the highest professional compliment is not courtroom skill but being called “very professional” by opposing counsel.
