John Boyd has witnessed profound transformation in the legal profession, identifying the entry of women and people of color as the most significant change — not only in numbers, but in the perspectives and experiences they brought to every facet of practice, expanding access to justice for those who were often overlooked when he began.
Boyd leads collaboratively, seeking input from young lawyers and staff as issues are identified and sharing accumulated pleadings, research, briefs, depositions and case outcomes as tools for the team rather than prescribing a single approach.
He takes the greatest satisfaction from representing hard-working women, men and their families — getting to know them and helping them find remedies in the law. He advises young attorneys to admit when they don’t have an answer, engage in bar associations and seek out experienced lawyers as mentors.
He closed with a saying he attributes to Mark Twain: “Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest.”
